Drink in the beauty of the valley
From whatever direction you enter the Similkameen Valley, you will catch your breath. The ruggedness, the expanse of natural terrain, the green valley protected by steep mountains, and the Similkameen River winding its way through the region.
There is a quietness to the valley, a sense that it is remains more natural than other areas, untouched. But as you drive or cycle through the region, you will notice the farms dotting the land, the orchards full of cherries, peaches, apples of all varieties and of course vineyards with rows and rows of grapes soaking up the heat and sun. You will see the people of the valley working the land, tending to crops, and managing their operations.
Though it is quiet, and we encourage a more relaxed pace, you are not stepping back in time. You are stepping into a thriving community of people, real people creating real food, wine and cider. Considered the “organic capital of Canada” the area is known for small farms and producers dedicated to creating quality food and award winning wines.
But it is not all about work, there is much to do and experience within the valley for residents and visitors alike. Be sure to visit the wineries and cideries of the Similkameen Independent Winegrowers. Take your time, talk to the people, learn about their practices, and products. Enjoy a taste of the Similkameen. Bring a picnic and enjoy a glass of wine and the spectacular views at their tasting rooms. Check out the many winemaker dinners in the valley and experience true culinary delights.
Take a break and visit the Grist Mill and Gardens Heritage Site which is like an oasis in the hot desert-like conditions of the Valley. You can relax on the grounds of the gardens, see a working grist mill, wander through heritage buildings and take in one of the many outdoor concerts under the chestnut trees.
Stay in the valley at one of the many B&B’s. From luxury vineyard suites to riverside, orchard or farm homes and suites, there are options for everyone. The Similkameen Valley is west of the South Okanagan Valley running alongside of Highway #3. Only 20 minutes from Osoyoos and 30 minutes from Penticton, it is a short, beautiful drive to an extraordinary place. Click to view map.
